Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) is the second international branch campus in your Lancaster series, located in Accra. It is the first British university branch campus ever established in Ghana, bringing a full UK degree experience directly to West Africa. This sub-campus is Lancaster’s flagship African venture, run with the Transnational Academic Group (TAG) since 2013. Now, it’s operating from a purpose-built campus with capacity for 3,000 students.

4.1.1 Faculties and Programs Available at Lancaster University Ghana

General academic model

All programmes in Lancaster University Ghana are taught in English and lead to a genuine Lancaster University (UK) degree, delivered under Lancaster’s academic oversight. These degrees are accredited by Ghana’s National Accreditation Board. Also, they are regulated by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education QAA).

There is a one-year Foundation Programme available for students who don’t yet meet direct entry requirements, alongside English language development from elementary to intermediate level. The Foundation Programme itself has been separately accredited by the British Accreditation Council. Also, it is the first such accreditation for any West African education provider.

Professional accreditation

The Business programmes are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). This gives graduates a recognised professional pathway alongside their academic degree.

Practical, hands-on learning (Computer Science example)

Computer Science students have taken part in the “Agile in Africa” conference and visited the Kofi Annan Centre to learn about networking technology. Also, they have competed in the MEST Hackathon, which shows a genuinely practical, industry-connected approach to teaching.

4.1.2 History & Functions of Lancaster University Ghana

Founding

Lancaster University Ghana was established in 2013, making it the first branch of a British university campus in Ghana. It was built with the aim of bringing together expertise from West Africa and the UK to tackle global challenges.

The founding partnership was between Lancaster University (UK) and the Transnational Academic Group (TAG), which is a Dubai-based education company launched in 2007 to develop human capacity in emerging markets. TAG owns and operates the physical campus, and Lancaster provides the academic degree and oversight.

Alongside LUG, TAG also owns and operates Curtin University’s Dubai campus and South Africa-based ABN Training, in partnership with the Australian Institute of Management. This shows that LUG sits within a broader international group of similar transnational education ventures.

Campus relocation and expansion

The original campus operated from an earlier Accra location before the university’s major relocation. Then, the new campus was inaugurated on 5 October 2021, at Tantra Hill, Accra. It was officially opened by Professor Mohammed Salifu, Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

This university was developed in phases, with the finished campus designed to serve up to 3,000 students and 300 staff. Also, it shows deliberate, large-scale ambition well beyond the campus’s size at founding.

At the inauguration, TAG co-founder Rakesh Wahi highlighted STEM, computer science, healthcare, nursing, and hospitality as key areas for short-term development, alongside plans for further campuses in Nigeria, East Africa, and South Africa.

Current function

Lancaster University Ghana functions today as a growing hub for business, computing, law, and international relations education across West Africa, giving students access to a UK-accredited degree without needing to leave the continent.

4.1.3 History of Accra 

Early origins

The city of Accra was founded in the 15th century by the Ga people, who migrated to the Gulf of Guinea coast from further north. The name “Accra” is believed to derive from “Nkran,” meaning “ants” . It is possibly a reference to the many anthills in the surrounding savannah, or a symbolic nod to the industrious nature of the local people.

Portuguese traders first settled on the coast near Accra in 1482, establishing a fort that operated until the Ga people destroyed it in 1578.

European trading era

Three fortified trading posts were built between 1650 and 1680 by the Danes, Dutch, and British, respectively. These forts were later adapted for colonial administrative purposes.

The Danes left the region in 1850 and the Dutch in 1872, leaving the British as the dominant colonial power on this stretch of coast. Then, it paved the way for the British to consolidate full control shortly afterward.

Becoming the colonial capital

Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast colony in 1877, replacing Cape Coast. Cape Coast was struggling with malaria outbreaks and political instability at the time, while Accra offered a drier, healthier coastal climate and stronger trade links.

Independence and the modern era

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957, with Accra remaining the national capital. Then, Accra officially became the capital of the new Republic of Ghana in 1961.

Under Nkrumah, Accra became a symbol of Pan-Africanism, hosting liberation movements, African leaders, and global dignitaries.

Today, Accra functions as Ghana’s administrative, economic, and educational centre. So, it is home to major banks, trading firms, insurance agencies, and the University of Ghana Medical School, among other institutions. It is a genuinely fitting backdrop for a university branch campus, given the city’s long-standing educational role.

4.1.4 Infrastructure & Facilities at Lancaster University Ghana

Lancaster University Ghana is located at 44 Eagle Lane, Tantra Hill, off Achimota-Nsawam Road, Accra. It is a fixed, purpose-built campus location following the 2021 relocation. It is a modern, phased-development campus, designed with room to grow toward its eventual 3,000-student capacity.

Smart Classrooms

This has modern, technology-equipped teaching spaces built into the new campus design. Also, it is a part of the core academic infrastructure delivered as the campus was developed.

Library Learning Common

This functions as a “one-stop shop” for student learning and services. It also combines library resources with broader student support in a single space.

On-site Hostel Accommodation

There is student housing built directly into the campus, which is a genuinely significant infrastructure feature. So, unlike Leipzig, LUG offers accommodation right on its own site.

Multi-purpose Sports Complex

There are dedicated sports facilities available directly on campus. So, students have access to their own sports facilities without needing to use external municipal venues.

Prayer Rooms

There are dedicated spaces for both Muslim and Christian students and staff. This reflects a genuine effort to accommodate Ghana’s religiously diverse student population.

4.1.5 Weather in Accra 

Accra experiences a Tropical wet and dry/savanna climate (Köppen: Aw), though some sources classify it as a local steppe climate (BSh) due to relatively low rainfall for a tropical coastal city. This classification discrepancy reflects Accra’s genuinely unusual position as one of the driest capital cities on the West African coast.

The Warmest month in Accra is March, with average highs around 29–31°C (84–88°F). Also, the Coolest month is August, with average highs around 23–27°C (73–81°F). The annual average temperature is approximately 26–28°C (79–82°F).

The annual rainfall is approximately 730–748 mm, a moderate total that’s notably lower than in many other tropical West African cities. The wettest month is June, with rainfall reaching 175–183 mm. And the driest month is January, with only around 10–17 mm of rainfall.

4.1.6 Transportation & Airports Near LUG

By road

The Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) is located at Tantra Hill, off Achimota-Nsawam Road, Accra. So, it is reached mainly by taxi, ride-hailing (Uber/Bolt), or tro-tro, which is a shared minibus used for common local transport. The traffic in Accra can be heavy, taking extra travel time, especially during peak hours.

By air

The nearest and only airport to Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) is Kotoka International Airport (ACC). It is situated about 9–10 km from central Accra, within city limits. Moreover, Terminal 3, which was added in 2018, handles international flights, up to 5 million passengers per year.

There are taxis from the airport to the city, which take around ~20–30 min. These charge around $11–14. Moreover, ride-hailing apps are common and cost-effective. In addition, public buses/tro-tros are also available, but are mostly used by locals, not typical for visiting students.

Longer-distance travel

There are over 30 direct international flight routes from Kotoka to Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. Domestic flights within Ghana also depart from Terminal 2.

4.1.7 Student Life at LUG

Entertainment

The Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) is close to Accra’s main hubs, which are Osu, East Legon, and Cantonments. So, students can have easy access to shopping, dining, and cultural experiences.

Osu, which is known as the “Oxford Street of Accra,” has boutiques, markets, restaurants, and cafés. Moreover, students have access to museums, Independence Arch, Black Star Square, and cultural sites.

Sports facilities

There is a multi-purpose sports complex on campus, which is built into the new Tantra Hill site. In addition, there are other options outside the campus, such as Accra Sports Stadium and various private gyms across the city.

Also, there is beach access nearby, as Labadi Beach is located in that area. There, students can play casual sports, volleyball, and jog.

Clubs & societies

There are student-organised groups tied to courses such as business, computing, and law societies, likely based on subject mix. Also, there is a strong Hackathon/competition culture led by the MEST Hackathon, Social Storm entrepreneurship event, and Agile in Africa conference.

Extra & co-curricular activities

There are course-linked field visits such as the Kofi Annan Centre for Networking Technology. Also, there are entrepreneurship-focused events such as a 24-hour hackathon with postgraduate students.

In addition, there are student mobility programmes such as UK exchange, Study Abroad, and Summer Programmes.

4.1.8 Night Life in Accra

Osu (Oxford Street area)

The Oxford Street area is the main nightlife district with bars, clubs, and restaurants. This area is a busy, walkable strip, with a mixed local and expat crowd. The notable spots are Sai Wine Bar, Purple Pub, Bloom Bar, and Osu Beach Bar.

Labadi Beach

This beach is popular among students for beach party scenes on weekends. Also, the beach has open-air DJs, Afrobeats/reggae/dancehall, which people can dance. The entry fare is cheap, roughly GH₵20–30.

Twist / Labone area

This is Accra’s high-energy main club with a big room, resident + guest DJs, Afrobeats/Amapiano/Dancehall. The crowd here is mostly young, dressed up, mixed locals/diaspora.

4.1.9 Accommodation for LUG Students

University hostel accommodation

There is an on-site hostel built into the new Tantra Hill campus. Also, this was part of a phased campus development that added smart classrooms, a library, a hostel, a sports complex, and a cafeteria to the campus.

Off-campus

There are private housing/apartments available across Accra East Legon and Cantonments.

4.1.10 Medical Services & Nearest Hospitals

International students are advised to arrange health insurance before arrival.

Nearest major hospital

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has been a teaching hospital since 1962 and is located on Guggisberg Avenue, Accra. It has 2000 beds, making it the largest in Ghana and the 3rd largest in Africa. Also, there is a full emergency department, an Accident Centre, and a Surgical/Medical Emergency unit. Ghana’s leading national referral hospital serves 500,000+ patients/year.
