History of the US. Virgin Islands.

The islands received their current name when Christopher Columbus, on his second journey in 1493, is supposed to have been the first European to observe them. Following the arrival of the Spanish in 1555, English and French immigrants began arriving in St. Croix in 1625. After that, the islands were contested by Spain, France, Britain, and the Netherlands for a protracted period. The islands proved to be perfect for sugar plantations; during the 18th and early 19th centuries, the island’s economy was based on the production of sugarcane by slaves from Africa. Cotton and indigo dye were some of the additional plantation crops. (Better source is required) A substantial Jewish community also started to settle on the islands in the 17th and 18th centuries.

First slave rebellions

One of the earliest major slave uprisings in the New World took place in St. John in 1733. That was when Akan-Akwamu slaves from the Gold Coast (current-day Ghana) seized control of the island for six months. With assistance from the French in Martinique, the Danish were able to overcome the slave Africans. More than a dozen of the ringleaders shot themselves before the French soldiers could apprehend them, refusing to allow themselves to be taken. According to estimates, slaves outnumbered Danish settlers by a ratio of 8:1 by the year 1775.

The reform phase came to an end when World War I broke out, isolating the islands once more. Fearing that Germany might seize the islands as a base for its submarines during the submarine warfare phases of the war, the United States approached Denmark once more about purchasing them. After several months of discussion, a selling price of $25 million in US gold coins, or $622.55 million in 2021 dollars, was reached. A consensus in favor of selling formed in the Danish parliament at the same time as the economics of continuing possession weighed heavily on the minds of Danish decision-makers.
