Peel Park Campus functions as the administrative, academic, and historical core of the University of Salford. These premises host multiple schools and shared teaching and research facilities. This sub campus places a strong focus on applied learning, industry engagement, and professional accreditation. So, they offer undergraduate, postgraduate (academic & research), doctoral and professional development programs.

Salford Business School

Salford Business School, located in the Peel Park campus premises, is one of the largest faculties at the University of Salford. This school focuses on practice-based business education linked with industry. Students here learn key subject areas such as Business Management, where they get to explore business strategy, operations, and leadership. Under Accounting & Finance, students can learn ACCA-aligned modules and financial reporting. Marketing & Digital Marketing related modules teach about branding, consumer behaviour, and analytics.

School of Arts

While MediaCityUK is a major hub, academic administration and shared teaching link back to Peel Park. The School of Arts at the Peel Park campus focuses on visual arts, performance and theatre studies, music and sound design and creative technologies. Also, the faculty has interdisciplinary collaborations with engineering for sound, acoustics and computing for digital production tools.

There is no separate faculty for Law, Social Sciences & Humanities in the Peel Park campus. However, some border programs offer degrees in law and social sciences. Early origins of the Peel Park campus date back to 1896 with the establishment of the Royal Technical Institute, Salford. It was established to support industrial education, training engineers, technicians, and skilled workers.  At the time, the institute offered education programs in mechanical engineering, applied sciences and industrial technologies.

This institute was transformed into a University and upgraded to the College of Advanced Technology in the mid-20th century. In addition, it was awarded university status in 1967 by Royal Charter.

The modern role of Peel Park Campus is to function as the main teaching campus, administrative headquarters and student services hub. Centralised services in the Peel Park Campus include academic registry, library and research services, and student welfare and careers. So, the Peel Park Campus acts as a symbolic anchor linking the university’s past with modern expansion

4.1.3 History of the City of Salford

The city of Salford originated as a medieval settlement developed along the River Irwell. The city was granted market rights in the 13th century. Due to the Industrial Revolution, rapid urbanisation occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries. Key industries which developed in the city were textile manufacturing, engineering, dock and canal trade. Manchester Ship Canal transformed Salford into a major inland port.

This growth led the city to dense working-class housing and the expansion of technical education. However, due to the post-industrial decline following World War II, many manufacturing jobs were lost, and urban deprivation became a problem in some districts.

Late 20th-century regeneration initiatives caused infrastructure redevelopment, cultural investment and higher education expansion. Modern Salford is home to universities, industrial areas, services and cultural institutions.

Peel Building

This is the oldest and most iconic structure on the Peel Park campus. It is constructed in red brick and terracotta and originally housed engineering workshops and lecture rooms. Moreover, the building is currently used for teaching spaces and academic offices. In addition, Peel Hall in the Peel building is a major performance and event venue. Peel Hall is used for concerts, conferences, and graduations. It has strong acoustics and a heritage interior.

New Science, Engineering & Environment Building

This is a purpose-built modern facility located in the Peel Park Campus of the University of Salford, which is designed to support interdisciplinary research and industry collaboration. Facilities in the New Science building include advanced science labs, engineering workshops, and environmental testing units. Moreover, it supports sustainability research and innovation designed with energy efficiency and flexible learning spaces.

Clifford Whitworth Library

Clifford Whitworth Library is the main academic library of the university. It has a multi-floor facility with silent study zones, group collaboration spaces, and digital resource facilities.

Extensive collections offered by this library include academic journals, E-books, and research databases. It acts as a 24/7 academic hub during peak periods.



Lady Hale Building

This building is named after Baroness Brenda Hale, who used to be a UK Supreme Court judge. The building offers areas dedicated to law and social sciences.

Facilities in the Lady Hale Building include mock courtrooms, seminar rooms, and legal research spaces to encourage professional legal training.

Salford Crescent Railway Station is located adjacent to Peel Park Campus. So, it serves as one of the busiest stations in Greater Manchester. It has direct rail connections to Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road, Bolton, Preston, and Liverpool.

Bus Services

Multiple bus routes pass along Crescent and Broad Street. Also, there are frequent services to Manchester city centre, MediaCityUK, Trafford, and the surrounding suburbs. In addition, student-friendly pricing and travel passes are available.

There are dedicated cycle lanes around campus. Also, there are secure bicycle parking facilities provided.

Airports

Manchester Airport is the primary international airport serving Salford. This airport is located approximately 25–30 minutes by train or car. Also, it is a major hub for international students coming from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a secondary airport option for the students at the Peel Park campus. It is located around 45–60 minutes travel time. It is used mainly for budget and European flights.

The Students’ Union is located within Peel Park Campus. So, there are regular events organised by the students’ Union such as Cultural nights, open-mic sessions, student fairs, guest talks and workshops.

Tom Husband Leisure Centre (on campus) offers gym and fitness suites, a 25-metre swimming pool, squash courts, sports halls and climbing walls. 

Moreover, there are university sports clubs which students can take part of such as, Football, Cricket, Badminton, Basketball, Athletics and Swimming.

Popular student destinations in this area include FAC251 – The Factory, which is a music-focused club, and YES Manchester, which is popular for live music + club nights. The Warehouse Project is also a popular place for international DJ events.
