Historical Background

Heslington West campus is the main campus of the University of York, which was established in 1963, and it was established during a major UK university expansion period. Heslington West Campus is built on former agricultural parkland near Heslington village. The initial student population was less than 250 students, and the early university vision was to establish a modern research university outside crowded cities.

Campus planning and infrastructure were influenced by modernist educational architecture.
