Are you a fan of the amazing Disney movie frozen? I mean who isn’t? What do you think of the beautiful ice castle constructed by Elsa? Today we are going to explore an amazing hotel almost the same as Elsa’s ice castle. It is the Ice Hotel in Sweden. It is an extraordinary hotel that contains everything made of ice, for instance, staircases, statues, tables, etc. The whole building is made of ice and snow except for mattresses and reindeer fur. This Hotel is constructed every October and it melts in the spring. Furthermore, the way that this idea has been initiated and the milestones the hotel has passed, and the way that they are maintaining and rebuilding this hotel are fascinating.

Where is it located?

This wondrous place is located on the natural border of Sweden near the river Torne. It is situated in Jukkasjärvi, in northern Sweden. You have to travel about 17 kilometers (11 mi) from Kiruna to reach here. The unique fact about this hotel is that it is the world’s first and largest ice hotel. There are several ice hotels constructed in the world but this hotel stays as the original. This hotel’s ideal designs and stunning views have made it a landmark in Sweden. Moreover, it has become a bucket list staple for everyone who is enjoying their arctic adventure.

This idea was originally commenced as a result of a workshop held for ice crafters in1989. This workshop was held in a bar inside an igloo. After the workshop, some artists stayed overnight and one of them came up with the idea of constructing an ice hotel. There are 56 rooms in this hotel which is individually designed by a veteran ice artist. Furthermore,  the hotel offers gorgeous rooms designed in different themes. According to the artists designing a room is not an easy task. Because they have to work continuously for days. Every October the authorities of ice hotel receive hundreds of design proposals. The hotel crew selects the best out of them to maintain the exclusiveness of this one-of-a-kind hotel.

The melting Hotel

During October, crew members construct these beautiful styles using the water of the nearby river Torn. According to artists river Torn has magical water. Because of that, the water of this river flows slowly it can freeze into high-quality ice. The constructions consume over 34000 tons of water. This hotel is open from mid-December to mid-April. During winter the temperature of the Jukkasjärvi area hits -20 Celsius. But they keep the temperature inside the hotel at approximately -5 degrees Celsius. 45000-day trippers and 15000 overnight visitors come to visit these eye-catching ice structures every year.  In their opinion, the warm-hearted people and the cold weather can make this hotel a magical place. In addition, a room in an ice hotel in Sweden costs around 270 euros per night. The artists change the architecture in every room using their pioneering techniques every year.



New Ice Hotel 365

In 2016 Ice hotel in Sweden marked a new and innovative benchmark. Instead of reconstructing the ice hotel every year, they build a hotel that can stay frozen even in summer. In summer the temperature of the Jukkasjärvi area rises to 20 degrees Celsius. But they have structured a hotel that uses solar power to maintain the inner temperature at -5 degrees. As this area is gifted with 24/7 sunlight in summer this building can generate electricity all over the day. Though this hotel is permeant there is a  workplace with a constant supply of ice for modifications needed. But this is not just a regular workplace. This is a giant refrigerator. On the inner side of this workplace, they maintain the temperature below freezing in order to manage the quality of the ice bars.

Ice Bar

The ice bar is the first thing you see when entering the Ice hotel. It is made of ice with an icy blue hue to it. They offer different kinds of vodka that helps to keep you warm. For instance, their menu encompasses Varagatass-vodka, Lovely Jukkas- Vanilla Vodka, Torne Breeze- absolute vodka, and Aikoholfritt. The extraordinary fact about this bar is that they offer every drink in a glass made of ice. But don’t worry they offer a protective glove for their customers for easy handling.

Themed Rooms

The Ice Hotel 365 has 20 permanent rooms designed by sculptors all around the world. Walking through those rooms gives you a magical feeling like you are in a scene of a movie frozen. Every room has been designed according to a different theme. Also, each room has a name given according to the theme.



34 meters– This is a room with a long hallway entrance. at the end of the entrance, you can see your ice bed.

Cabinet in the woods- This has a beautiful design that reminds an igloo. It has a fabulous transparent ice structure in front of the bed.

Art Suite Gallery– This room looks like a frozen art gallery. It contains ice statues ice couches and beautiful drawings made out of ice and snice.

Early spring– This room is a beautiful room with a huge ice arch lightened with white lights.

Crescents–  This room has a spectacular approaching way decorated with a phenomenal and magnificent set of structures that resemble waves.

Danger thin ice– this room has a walkway to the bed which reminds a royal suite. In addition, this walkway has bordered with icw fence to give it an incredible look.

Dreaming in a dream– This room has jaw-dropping architecture. The room is featured a huge structure of a snow chameleon and lots of imaginary structures. Also, the creators have set up sound systems relevant to each structure to give us a more realistic experience.

Ice Cinema

In addition, there is a bathroom attached to every room which includes a warm room hot bath and a cabinet to store your luggage. You can enjoy a hot cup of tea in the morning while getting a nice hot bath.

Furthermore, there is a separate room full of photos which is a gallery. It shows how the ice hotel started, how it evolved, and what it looked like in different stages.  Also, you can see a cinema in this hotel which is also constructed out of ice.
