First deiced whether you planning to adopt a puppy or an adult dog. Adopting a puppy is a lot of work. An adult dog is trained and easy to care for. The next step is to research the breed you planning to adopt. Choose the best breed which will suit your lifestyle and budget. If you are a busy bee reconsider before adopting one.

from where you plan to adopt the pup

Decide from where you plan to adopt the puppy. From a home, shelter, breeder, or pet shop. It is always advised to adopt from a home where you can check on both mother and father of the pup. In pet shops, puppies can come from every corner of the country. Also, they stay all together in a cage and they can be sensitive to many diseases as well.

Adopt a pup who is more than 8 weeks old. The longer they stay with their mother is healthier and have a strong immunity system. Most breeders sell very young puppies where you will end up getting a sick pup. So be careful!

Ask questions from the owner. About their vaccinations, worming, sicknesses, and food. Always make sure to adopt a pup who is vaccinated and wormed. Vaccinated pups are always healthy and safe. This is important if you have small kids at home. Usually, their first vaccine is given when they are six weeks old. All puppies should be dewormed every two weeks starting at the age of two weeks.

Look for the appearance of the pup. Check on his eyes, ears, head, skin, mouth, and, body wall. Eyes should be clear and without redness. Also no hair loss around his eyes. His ears should not have an odor or discharge. The pup’s gums should be pink in color and moist. His skin and coat should be clean, without red spots and flaky. Look how he walks and reacts with his other playmates.

Take the puppy to the veterinarian as soon as you buy him for a pre-purchase examination. Your veterinarian will thoroughly examine your newly brought puppy and will guide you with his vaccinations, worming, and meal plans. This will help you to identify any existing problems.

What should I do when I bring the puppy home?

Let him sniff and run around your home. This will help him to familiarize his new place. Stay close with him and provide lots of hugs and cuddles. He might miss his playmates on the first night so give him some soft toys to play and cuddle up in the night. This will help both of you to have a good night’s sleep. Also, you can play a piece of soft music for him to fall asleep.  Designate an area for him to eat and sleep.

Take him out to the garden after his meals do his pee and poo. Stay with him until he finishes his business. This is the best way to train him to avoid doing his pee and poo inside the house. Slowly he gets used to it and does it on his own later.
