History & Functions of Hendon Campus

History & Functions of Hendon Campus

Historical Development

The history of the Hendon Campus dates back to the amalgamation of several colleges in 1973 and the formation of Middlesex Polytechnic. The campus has been providing education since 1878, with the opening of the teacher training college, St. Katherine’s College. Middlesex Polytechnic was awarded university status in 1992 and became Middlesex University.

Previously, Middlesex University operated in multiple sites across North London. A strategic focus strategy implemented from 2005 to 2012 consolidated most operations into the extended Hendon Campus. Therefore, the campus witnessed significant expansion and development during these decades.

Current Operations

Hendon Campus is the administration headquarters and main academic campus of Middlesex University. It is used mainly for in-depth teaching, research, and student support services. Apart from that, it serves as a community hub with public and cultural activities, conferences, etc.

The campus also houses the university’s main library, sports facilities, and student dormitories. Simultaneously, it functions as an interface between university research and industry through its innovation centers and business incubators. The campus therefore facilitates the transfer of knowledge between the university and its external partners.

4.1.3. History of Hendon and Surrounding Area

History of Hendon and Surrounding Area

History of Hendon and Surrounding Area

From village to London suburb

Hendon has a very long history dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period when it was referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Hendun.” In medieval times, it was still a rural village on an ancient London to Edgware road. Despite its proximity to London, Hendon retained its rural status until the late 19th century.

The most significant transformation came with the Midland Railway in 1868 and the extension of the Northern Line to Hendon Central in 1923. The consequence was rapid urbanisation. Hendon became a London suburb by the mid-1930s from what was previously a countryside parish.

Modern-day Hendon

In 1965, Hendon merged with the new London Borough of Barnet. During the later 20th century, the suburb further extended as an educational and residential center. Most importantly, Middlesex University’s increased performances has shaped the local character and economy enormously.

Now, Hendon offers suburban peace and great access to London’s city center. Additionally, its culturally diverse residents are in tune with London’s multicultural nature. The area surrounding the campus has a mix of old buildings, newer developments, and green spaces, thereby providing good surroundings to the residents and students.

Campus Development and Local Identity

The expansion of the Middlesex University campus has played an important role in giving identity to contemporary Hendon. The presence of the university was earlier very minimal. However, campus expansion since 2005 has transformed the area into an active learning quarter.
Some of the various points of appeal in the area are the RAF Museum, in honor of the area’s aviation history, and the Burroughs, a conservation area that has several premier buildings such as Hendon Town Hall. Hendon Central, on the other hand, has student-friendly shopping facilities and eateries. Consequently, the town and the university have grown in an interdependent relation that is mutually supportive.

4.1.4 Hendon Campus Infrastructure Facilities

The Sheppard Library

Completed in 2004, the prize-winning Sheppard Library is the campus’s academic heart. Named after Middlesex University’s first Chancellor, Lord Sheppard of Didgemere, the building is both contemporary in style and smart in practicality. The library has in excess of 300,000 books and is home to extensive digital resources.

The learners are privileged to have varied study spaces that consist of silent spaces, group study spaces, and computer labs. Also, the building has the Learning Enhancement Team’s office, where learners may obtain academic support. There is an exhibition and cafe area that is located on the ground floor, making the space inviting enough to study and unwind.

The Rickett Quadrangle

This outdoor public space is situated in the center of the main campus buildings and is a common space for students and visitors. Renovated in 2011, the quadrangle features landscaped gardens, seating areas, and public artwork. In good weather, it is utilized for outdoor events and student activities.

The quadrangle is flanked by major academic buildings, thus providing easy access between the departments. The area is designed to promote campus circulation while creating a space that encourages the student body and staff to assemble between periods.

The College Building

Dating back to 1939, the Grade II listed building was formerly the location of Hendon Technical College. The building was refurbished extensively in 2004 and now houses administrative offices, classrooms, and the university’s reception area. The art deco features of the building have been meticulously preserved, guaranteeing its place in history.

The College Building is home to University Executive and student facilities in office space. Besides that, its impressive entrance with marble stairs sets the visitor off to a grand beginning. The building is the combination of the institution’s heritage and contemporary identity.

Williams Building

Completed in 2015, this cutting-edge building houses Business School and the Faculty of Law. The building incorporates a range of environmental design features such as solar panels and natural ventilation. Within the building, there are also specialist facilities available to students, such as trading rooms, mock courts, and collaborative learning spaces.

The Williams Building is proof of the university’s commitment to industry-standard facilities. Besides, its open-plan design allows for interaction between students and with the faculty. The building’s top floor has a conference center with panoramic views of London and is thus a popular location for academic and corporate events.

Creative students are equipped with state-of-the-art industry facilities comprising fashion studios, photographic darkrooms, and digital media labs. The Grove also hosts regular exhibitions of student work, hence making the creative work in the university available to the general public.

MDXSU Building, Middlesex University Student Union

Refurbished in 2013, this student union building has been specifically designed to provide social space, office accommodation for student reps, and adviser services. The building has a bar, social spaces and meeting rooms available to student societies. The building is home to the MDXSU advice service, providing independent academic and welfare advice.

MDXSU Building is the hub of student voice and democracy. It is also the site of regular events, campaigns, and activities aimed at adding value to student life. Due to its strategic location, student voices are always the focus of the university life.
