How do Perfumes originate?

Just like the ancient Pyramids and the paintings of Da Vinci, perfumes also have a very rich history. According to the Mesopotamia Clay tablet, Tapputi was the first perfume maker was and she was a lady. They run back towards ancient Greeks and Egyptians.  We all know that Egyptians and the Greeks highly believed in Gods and Goddesses. We have heard many stories and rituals that they have conducted to make the Gods and Goddesses happy and to have a positive towards mankind.

The Egyptian priests have burnt wood and resins with aromas to create smokes with fragrances. They believed that they can communicate with Gods by creating these scented fumes. And the word perfume is made out of the Latin words per fumes. Moreover, the Kings and Queens added different scents into their baths, oils and even took them to their tombs.

Even the Persians were highly interested in fragrances. In those old times, perfumes happened to be a symbol that indicates nobility. The Persian kings had their private signature collection that was not even allowed by their companions or relatives. There was evidence that the Greeks and the Romans have conducted processes of making them. And the oldest perfume factory is established around 1850 B.C.

Perfume categories

Perfumes are also categorized into different categories based on the percentage of the perfume oil consistency. The duration of the fragrance that lasts also differs base on the categories.

The perfumes that contain 10% to 20% of perfume oil are Eau de Parfum (EDP). And the fragrance may last for 8 hours.

If the fragrance lasts between 4 to 7 hours then this type has around 5 to 15% perfume oil contamination. And they are the ones called Eau de Toilette (EDT).

Eau de Cologne has perfume oil of 2% to 4% and the fragrance will last for 2 to 3 hours.

Eau Fraiche has the lowest perfume oil concentration. It contains 1% to 2% of perfume oil and the fragrance lasts for like 2 hours. Most of your body sprays are Eau Fraiche type.

What is this perfume cycle?

The world-famous Australian perfume maker called Paul Jellinek introduced this diagram in 1949. The wheel that is being used today was developed by Michael Edwards by using Jellinek’s structure.

This perfume wheel is mainly introduced to identify which fragrances blend well and which ones get clashed. It is similar to the colour wheel that we learnt in kindergarten. This wheel consists mainly of main groups and subgroups. The main families are Floral, Oriental, Woody, and Fresh.
