Changi International Airport, Singapore.

Changi International Airport, Singapore.

Singapore Changi Airport was named the world’s top airport this year by Skytrax. The airport had dropped to the second position in the previous two years. But was now reclaiming first place. Singapore’s airport boasted the best dining and entertainment options in the whole globe. The airport is situated on 25 square kilometers (9.7 square mi)of land in the Changi area. It is in the easternmost point of Singapore, some 24 kilometers east of the city-downtown state’s core.  BOC Aviation, Jetstar Asia Airways, the national carrier of Singapore Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo, and its low-cost affiliate Scoot all have their home bases there. The airport also accommodates the headquarters of SATS. Due to Singapore’s advantageous location as a popular choice for layovers with high demand, the airport also acts as a focal city for Qantas and the main cargo hub for FedEx Express in Asia.

In 2019, 68.3 million people used Changi Airport. This contributed to its ranking as the 18th busiest airport in the world. The airport is run by Changi Airport Group, a fully owned subsidiary of Singapore’s Ministry of Finance. Moreover, it has three runways that are each 4 kilometers long and four terminal buildings.  Also, the construction of a fifth mega-terminal is presently underway.

Construction

The original Changi Airport master plan called for the construction of a dual-terminal and dual-runway layout over two stages. In order to eventually build two more passenger terminals, this must be done. The initial passenger terminal and runway were constructed during the project’s first phase. That was reused and upgraded to Changi Air Base’s main runway. It contains 45 aircraft parking spaces. Also, it features support structures including a sizable maintenance hangar, a fire station, workshops, and office space. It also included building an airfreight complex and parking spaces.   The second phase’s construction would start as soon as Phase 1 was finished. Also, it would contain a second runway. Then there will be more aircraft parking bays in addition to the existing 45 bays.

On July 1, 1981, Changi Airport would launch its commercial operations. Moreover,  on December 29, 1981, five months after it had its grand opening. There were 12.1 million passengers, ovtonnes0,000 tonnes of aviation freight, and 63,100 aircraft movements. With that, the airport concluded its first year of operation. During the following few decades, subsequent phases gradually opened. Terminal 2 opened for passenger service in 1990. Furthermore, terminals 3 and 4 in 2008 and 2017 respectively. It is anticipated that Terminal 5 will debut in 2030 and will be larger than all of the other terminals combined.

Design And Architecture

The design blends an intensive marketplace and a beautiful garden to create a new community-centric typology. This has made it the heart and soul of Changi Airport, carrying out its role as a connection between the current terminals. By fusing a sense of being in nature with cultural and recreational offerings, it asserts significantly the image of the airport as a positive and energetic urban hub and echoes Singapore’s moniker as “the City in the Garden.”

The 135,700 square meter facility is open to the public and houses a landside airport, indoor gardens, amusement parks, shops, dining establishments, and lodging options all under one roof. Both in-transit passengers and the broader public are affected by this. Additionally, it has pedestrian bridges that connect it directly to Terminals 1 as well as to Terminals 2 and 3. On the four cardinal axes—north, south, east, and west—there are gateway gardens.  It helps to orient visitors and provide visual links between the airport’s interior program components and those of the other airport terminals.
