The founding partners were Lancaster University (UK) and Beijing Jiaotong University (China). The city was founded as “Weihaiwei” in 1398, meaning “Imposing Maritime Guard”. This city was established for coastal defence against Japanese pirate raids. Also, this city was fortified with walls nearly 2 miles long, built from 1403 onward.
Qing Dynasty naval importance
Wrihai became home to the Beiyang Fleet, which was China’s first modern navy based on nearby Liugong Island from the 1880s. Also, the fleet commanded by Admiral Ding Ruchang is still remembered as a national hero in the city today.

History of Weihai
Battle of Weihaiwei occurred in 1895. There, the Japanese forces defeated the Beiyang Fleet and captured the city. In 1898, the city was leased to Britain as a colonial naval station and sanatorium under a 25-year agreement
In 1930, the city returned to Chinese control (Republic of China). Then, in 1938–1945, the city was occupied again, this time by Japan during WWII. Then, it was liberated on 10 May 1945.
