The Heslington East Campus is a result of the campus expansion project of the University of York, which developed due to the increasing student population. The construction of the Heslington East Campus began during the early 2000s and officially expanded the university beyond the original Heslington West area. Moreover, this campus is designed as a modern research and innovation campus that focuses on future-oriented education and sustainability. Also, this is one of the largest campus development projects in UK higher education.

The purpose of this campus expansion was the need for additional teaching and research space due to the growing international student population. So, a huge expansion of science, business, and health faculties occurred with the development of advanced research infrastructure. Also, this was a huge support for modern interdisciplinary education.

The city of York was founded as a Roman fortress named “Eboracum” around AD 71. It was a military and administrative centre in Roman Britain. Also, important Roman emperors visited York during the Roman period in Britain. Roman walls and ruins are still preserved in the city.

Later, the city had a Viking settlement called “Jorvik”. At that time, the city was a major trade centre in Northern Europe.
