The construction of the Heslington East Campus began during the early 2000s and officially expanded the university beyond the original Heslington West area. Also, this is one of the largest campus development projects in UK higher education.

4.1.3 History of the City of York

The city of York was founded as a Roman fortress named “Eboracum” around AD 71. It was a military and administrative centre in Roman Britain. Also, important Roman emperors visited York during the Roman period in Britain. Roman walls and ruins are still preserved in the city.



Later, the city had a Viking settlement called “Jorvik”. At that time, the city was a major trade centre in Northern Europe.
