History of the Campus

The Scarborough Campus, which is a regional campus of Coventry University, was established to expand higher education access in the Yorkshire Coast region. This was established mainly as a solution for low university participation rates in the coastal areas of North Yorkshire. It was established through collaboration between the university and local authorities. Initial teaching functions began in 2015, and the building of the buildings was completed in 2016. Then, the Campus developed as part of the Scarborough Sports Village regeneration project. That investment was approximately £ 14 million in campus development. It resulted in a gradual expansion of programmes in healthcare, business, computing, and social sciences.

Functions of the Campus

This university was primarily established to provide higher education opportunities for students in the Yorkshire Coast region. It supports regional workforce development through career-focused degree programmes. Moreover, the university’s curriculum is designed to address skill shortages in sectors such as healthcare, education, and technology.

4.1.3 History of the City of Scarborough

Scarborough town is a Coastal town with a history dating back over 1,000 years. There is evidence of early settlement during the Viking period in the 9th century. The name “Scarborough” is derived from the Old Norse term “Skarðaborg”, meaning Skarði’s fort or settlement.

Medieval Development

During the medieval era, the town developed as an important trading port and market town. It was granted a royal charter by Henry II during the 12th century.

Also, the establishment of the Scarborough Fair, an internationally known medieval trading fair, happened in this era.

The discovery of natural mineral spa waters in Scarborough town happened during the 17th century. This made the emergence of Scarborough as one of the earliest seaside resort towns in England. This broght the attraction of wealthy visitors seeking health treatments and recreation.

Coventry University Scarborough has a set of purpose-built buildings which were opened in 2016. These buildings are equipped with the facilities needed for the degrees offered by this campus. 

Main Campus Building

The main building of Coventry University Scarborough was opened in 2016. This building was built to expand higher education access along the Yorkshire Coast and support regional economic development. This building has a modern architectural design with a glass-fronted structure and an open-plan internal layout. Also, there is a minimal corridor design to encourage interaction and large windows for natural lighting.

In addition, there are flexible classroom configurations for primary Functions such as to house all academic departments and be the central hub for teaching, student support, and administration.

Library and Learning Resource Centre

This building is located on the ground floor for accessibility. It provides printed textbooks and academic journals, extensive digital database access, and computer workstations. Moreover, there are private and group study rooms and laptop loan services to assist students. So, this library building functions as both a research space and a collaborative study environment.

 Campus Café

This cafe serves as a central social hub and provides food and beverages for students and staff. It is also used for informal meetings, group discussions, and networking and social interaction. This area fosters a sense of community on campus.

Clinical Skills Laboratory

This lab is designed specifically for Health and Nursing programmes and simulates real hospital and healthcare environments. So, it includes hospital beds and ward setup, as well as medical equipment for practical training. Also, there are patient simulation mannequins for students to use in their practical sessions. So, this facility is mainly used for developing clinical competency before hospital placements.

 Cyber and IT Laboratories

There are dedicated spaces for Computing and Cyber Security programmes, which are equipped with high-specification computers and networking systems. Moreover, this provides cybersecurity simulation software which supports programming, system testing, and cybersecurity analysis.

Engineering and Science Laboratories

These laboratories are used for Electro-Mechanical Engineering and technical courses and provide practical project workspaces, testing equipment and technical apparatus for experimentation. These facilities focus on offering hands-on learning and applied technical skills.

Mock Law Court

This court is a simulated courtroom environment designed for Law and Policing students. It enables students to practice legal procedures, conduct mock trials and develop advocacy and courtroom skills. Also, it enhances experiential learning in legal education.

The campus is located next to the Scarborough Sports Village. So, students can access facilities such as a 25-meter swimming pool, a sports hall, and a football stadium. Moreover, these include outdoor pitches and fitness areas.
