The Canterbury campus is the main campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. It serves as the centre of academics and administrative services in the university. Initially, Canterbury Campus was established as a training college for teachers. Later, it expanded to provide a wide range of degree programs for students and obtained the “University” status.

4.1.1 Faculties and Programmes Available at Canterbury Campus

Today, Canterbury Campus offers a wide range of degree programs across fields such as arts, sciences, health, education, and humanities.

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Education is located right at the heart of the Canterbury Campus, and it offers degree programs in English language, history, languages, media and performance studies, music and creative practice, and teacher training and early childhood-related degrees. These degree programs are not only designed with the perfect theory lectures, but also with practical sessions. Especially, programs such as media, creative arts, and professional educational training include carefully designed practical classes.

The Faculty of Health and Wellbeing of the Cantebaty Campus is the main faculty that offers health -related degree programs. This faculty offers degree programs such as nursing, midwifery, allied health professions, public health, and social work. The university is equipped with simulation laboratories and clinical placement links for students to get practical experience in real-world health care.

In addition, degree programs in courses in psychology, social policy, criminology, business studies, law, and policing are offered by the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences of the Canterbury campus. These degree programs are carefully designed to provide skilled professionals to the industry and academia with practical and research experience.

Moreover, Canterbury Campus also offers interdisciplinary programs and partnerships. For instance, new courses in science, engineering, design, and medicine were introduced as a result of the Medway partnership.

4.1.2 History & Functions of Canterbury Campus

The Canterbury Campus, the main campus of Canterbury Christ Church, has a history dating back to 1962. At the time, there was a shortage of teachers in the UK. So, the Canterbury Christ Church Campus was established as a training college for teachers to compensate for the prevailing shortage of teachers in the country at the time. The education here was initially inspired by Christian religion-related studies. At the time it was established, it had 75 students and 9 staff.

Over time, the university expanded, broadening its degree programs and establishing partnerships with other universities. The academic curricula of the university changed from Christian-related studies to degree programs such as humanities, social sciences, health and allied disciplines, reflecting changing societal needs.

Finally, the institute gained the “University” status in 2005 due to its strong and broad academic background. Then, it became a leading hub for education, research, and professional practice in the UK.

During the recent decades, the campus’s infrastructure has developed drastically, with significant investments made to expand the university. In 2024, Canterbury Christ Church University acquired the Canterbury Prison Site and expanded the university. Moreover, in 2019, Canterbury Christ Church University opened a new building called the Daphne Oram building, which provided a creative arts facility. In addition, the Verena Holmes Building, which was built in 202,1 is committed to STEM education of the Kent and Medway Medical School.

So, the Canterbury campus functions as a dynamic learning environment that’s dedicated to education, professional training, and research. Also, it remains the institutional heart of the Canterbury Christ Church University.

4.1.3 History of Canterbury City 

The city of Canterbury, where the Canterbury campus is located, has a significant historical value. It is an urban area that holds a history that dates back to Roman times, when it was called Durovernum Cantiacorum. Later, the city of Canterbury became a major ecclesiastical center following the establishment of Cantebiry Cathedral in the 6th century. This site remains a pivotal heritage site to this day.

Throughout medieval times,s the city was popular as a pilgrimage site. Still, the city’s heritage is well reflected through well-preserved buildings such as the Westage towers. Westage Towers are the largest surviving medieval city gate in England, and historic institutions that date back centuries.

The ancient development of Canterbury as a metropolis has been strengthened with the aid of its religious and academic traditions. The city protects its cultural heritage through its UNESCO World Heritage site, which includes the historic cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey, and St Martin’s Church. The university built its campus on orchards and domestic holdings, which existed next to St Augustine’s Abbey. So, this created a hyperlink between its unique vicinity and the ancient land use.

Canterbury has a mix of ancient architectural elements and modern residential areas. The town includes a vibrant center for tourism, cultural activities, and academic institutions. The heritage of the campus, together with its current vibrant environment, creates a space that enables relaxation for students and faculty members at the Canterbury Campus.

4.1.4 Infrastructure & Facilities at Canterbury Campus

The Canterbury campus is a site rich with historical monuments and modern facilities. Students here can benefit from magnificent historical buildings and modern infrastructure facilities. The campus’s layout centres on a courtyard adjacent to the distinctive Christ in Majesty chapel, known for its glass roof formed from isosceles triangles. Also, this is a landmark that blends architectural innovation with spiritual significance.

North Holmes Campus

This building is built on a former orchard and is a building of historical significance. In this building, there are academic departments, lecture theatres and administrative offices. Many buildings in the Canterbury campus are named after former Archbishops of Canterbury, reflecting the university’s historical foundations.

Augustine House

This is the central library of the Canterbury campus. This was built as part of the university’s redevelopment project. It encompasses study zones, digital resources and learning support facilities. So, it encourages independent study, group work and research engagement.

Daphne Oram Building

This building was opened in 2019 as part of the arts faculty. So, it is dedicated to the arts and digital media.  This building includes a venue that provides performance studios, media labs, exhibition areas and creative workspaces. So, here students can do programmes in music, games design, media, photography and graphic design, promoting cutting-edge arts education.

Verena Holmes building

The Verena Holmes building, which opened in 2021, is used for science, technology, engineering and health education. The building includes unique laboratories, design studios and partnership areas which the Kent and Medway medical faculty uses through a partnership with the College of Kent. The facility serves the educational needs of programs in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and innovation and health sciences.

Christ Church Sports Activities Centre

The Christ Church Sports Centre, which opened in 2009, gives numerous fitness and recreational facilities, which include a gym, exercise studio, climbing wall and indoor sports halls. The facility contains standard fitness equipment, so it was used by the Puerto Rican group before their 2012 Olympic Games.

St George’s Centre

The St George’s Centre, which opened in 2012, features the students’ union area, which includes a bar and housing for over 200 college students. Also, the building provides exceptional spaces for various functions, while it remains part of the campus’s residential and social environment.

Canterbury experiences a temperate maritime climate, which is similar to the typical weather patterns found in the coastal inland regions of southern England. The climate experiences mild summer temperatures and chilly winter weather. It results in consistent rainfall throughout the entire year. The summer months bring temperatures that range from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius, creating perfect weather for college students to study and participate in outdoor activities. The winter months bring cool weather, with typical temperatures ranging from 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius, while frost forms during periods of extreme cold.

The campus perimeter features vibrant landscapes and green urban areas, which result from year-round rainfall. Moreover, the unpredictable weather patterns of spring and autumn create ideal conditions for university students to engage in both indoor and outdoor learning activities.

Local Transportation

Canterbury Campus is located on North Holmes Road, within walking distance of the city centre. Canterbury East Railway Station is lovated Approximately about 10–15 minutes’ walk away from the Canterbury Campus. This railway station provides direct services to London Victoria.

Canterbury West Railway Station is approximately a 20-minute walk from the campus. Also, students can take a short bus ride from the campus to reach this university. This railway station provides a high-speed rail to London St Pancras, which takes around 55 minutes to reach its destination.

Local bus services (Stagecoach South East)

There are frequent bus routes connecting the campus to the city centre, student accommodation areas, and shopping zones. In addition, the local bus services provide student discount travel cards.

Cycling infrastructure

There are special cycle lanes around campus and secure bicycle storage facilities. Moreover, the surrounding area has a pedestrian-friendly city layout. Most of the academic and social facilities are accessible on foot.

London Gatwick Airport is located around 70 miles away from the Canterbury campus and is accessible via train connections through London. Moreover, London Heathrow Airport is approximately 90 miles away and is suitable for international students coming to the Canterbury campus. London Stansted Airport is located around 75 miles away from the university.

Eurotunnel (Folkestone)

Furthermore, Eurotunnel (Folkestone) is reachable in 30 minutes by car/train. Eurotunnel is a 50.46-kilometre railway tunnel beneath the English Channel that connects Folkestone in the United Kingdom with Coquelles in northern France. This provides easy access to continental Europe.

The Canterbury campus is the main hub of student activity for Canterbury Christ Church University. Mostly, the students here have built a strong sense of community and inclusivity. There is a blend of academic, cultural, faith-based and social activities on campus.

There is an active Students’ Union at Canterbury Christ Church University. They host student-led volunteering and outreach programs.

Entertainment & Cultural Activities

There is a gallery called the Sidney Cooper Gallery, which is a university-run art gallery that students can visit during their free time. Also, there are live performances, exhibitions and creative showcases in these premises. Moreover, the student union organises film screenings and guest lectures for students. The are which the Canterbury campus is located has a compact yet student-friendly nightlife. It is mostly concentrated in Canterbury city centre. There is a safe, walkable distance from campus to the Canterbury city centre, so students can easily reach restaurants and nightclubs.

Popular Clubs

The Cuban is a popular club that frequently hosts student nights and themed DJ events.

In addition, the Club Chemistry is a club that has multiple rooms with mainstream and electronic music. The Ballroom is a nightclub with a large dance floor and regular student promotions.

Bars & Pubs

The Thomas Tall is an alehouse which is very popular among students. It is a traditional English pub with a relaxed atmosphere. Also, the Penny Theatre is a theatre-style pub with live music and performances.

The Parrot Canterbury is a historic pub which is a good social meeting point for students.

There are accommodations on campus which are managed by the university. These student residences are within walking distance of the lecture halls. Also, there are en-suite and shared facilities available on campus.

St George’s Centre

This is an on-campus building that provides modern accommodation with social spaces. Also, the utilities which are provided by George’s centre often include Wi-Fi, heating, and security.

There are private student housing in Canterbury city. There are shared student houses near campus owned by purpose-built student accommodation providers. Even though private accommodations are costly, there are lower-cost options further from the city centre.

Nearest Hospitals

Kent and Canterbury Hospital is approximately 10 minutes away from campus. It provides emergency and specialist services. Also, the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford is a major regional hospital, which is located around 30 minutes by car/train.
