The Middlesbrough campus is the main sub campus of Teesside University, which is located in Middlesbrough. So, this campus acts as the main hub which regulates students’ services and activities. Here, students visiting from every corner of the world are studying, growing, and making friends. In short, the campus at Middlesbrough can be described as the heart of Teesside University. Through this article, I’m going to give you a detailed description regarding the schools and programs, campus information and its potential, the city’s history, infrastructure, and major buildings on the campus, and also the community climate.

4.1.1 Faculties and Programs Available in the Sub Campus

Middlesbrough campus has a wide range of faculties. The Faculty of Arts, Design, and Social Sciences is the first faculty that we are going to look into. This faculty teaches students about subjects such as English, media, art, and design. They also conduct studios and workshops on-site.

The Faculty of Health, Education and Community Studies is another major faculty in the university. In this faculty, the university trains nurses, teachers, social workers, and public health experts. Most of these programs offer practical placement and lab work modules.

Moreover, the Faculty of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing offers degree programs in engineering, computing, and life sciences. The university conducts sessions with laboratories, workshops, and research kits for this degree program.

Finally, there is the Teesside Business School that teaches business, management, marketing, and accounting, with a strong focus on employability and agency links.

4.1.2 History & Functions of the Sub Campus

This campus site was not a large university at the time it was first established. It was established as a technical university. This campus has been developing over many years since its establishment as a technical university. Today, it serves multiple roles. To begin with, it became a centre for teaching and learning to the extent that most lectures and laboratories were conducted there. Furthermore,  it has gradually built itself to be a centre for research and innovation, particularly in engineering and virtual technologies. Thirdly, it supports community engagement through outreach and local partnerships. Moreover, it consists of student services- careers advice, counselling, and international student support.

The campus is also the main site for graduation and public events. Year by year, the campus has grown with varied developments in buildings and facilities. This has made the campus much more flexible and better equipped for a glorious future than before. In short, the Middlesbrough campus, once a small university, has evolved into a large, multipurpose university centre.

4.1.3 History of the City Where the Sub Campus Is Located

Middlesbrough is often described as an industrial city, steeped in history, with its industrial heritage. Beginning in the 19th century, the iron and steel industries shaped the shipbuilding industry. That became a major industry that was done on the banks of the Tees River. Ports or wharves on the banks of the river thrived with trade from days gone by, allowing changes in the town from moulding industries.

Later, Middlesbrough invested in regeneration and culture. The programs for commercialisation turned into the arts, education, and cyber management. Thus, the town today reflects a business history juxtaposed with present urban life. Consequently, museums, galleries, and public spaces became storytellers of the city. People stroll around observing how the city has metamorphosed from a heavy industry to service and creative sectors. The arrival of the university gave yet another breath of fresh air to this city. Thus, Middlesbrough is now poised to offer university students a quality higher education.

4.1.4 Infrastructure Facilities at the Sub Campus

The Middlesbrough campus has a well-organised infrastructure that includes classrooms, lecture theatres and laboratories in technological and engineering courses. In addition, the departments of innovative subjects have art studios and common performance areas. Student support services are easily accessible through their website. Moreover, the library offers books, study areas, and resources. Placements and interests searches are served at the Careers and Employability centres. Among the sports facilities are gyms, courts, and fitness areas. There are many dining options and cafes spread around the campus for everyday living. The public transport links the campus to the city, and the wider area is reachable by buses and trains. The campus also provides accommodation for many students, run by student unions through clubs and societies. All such amenities together constitute a complete student experience, guiding students in education, social life, and wellness. Below, I describe prominent buildings and their functions in more detail.

This has classrooms and seminar areas for business-related subjects. It also has meeting rooms for student projects and industry workshops. The building also consists of spaces to host guest lectures. It thus plays a vital role in career development and practical learning.

The blocks incorporate labs and specialised machines. They are formed to obtain practical knowledge in engineering and life sciences. College students can use labs, try out devices, and use fabrication tools. Moreover, corporations use these areas for completed projects with local firms. Consequently, the engineering and science blocks are central for technical and experimental study.

This centre comprises arts studios, design workshops, and performance spaces. Furthermore, it has exhibition spaces that are utilised by students to showcase their work. The campus consists of a gym, courts, and fitness training as sports facilities. Different sports teams are trained here to play. The facility also provides wellness programs in fitness. Therefore, this makes it easy for students to check their balance of health and activity.

Accommodation Halls

University halls provide on-campus accommodation to hundreds of first-year students. It offers a variety of rooms, ranging from en-suites to shared rooms. Residence life includes residential support teams and community activities. Living on campus allows university students to settle in as quickly as possible.

Several research centres on the campus work with local businesses. They provide space for startups and industry projects. These places support students and staff in turning ideas into products. 4.1.5 Weather in the City Area of the Sub Campus

Middlesbrough’s weather is typical for northeast England. Winters are cool and frequently moist, with temperatures normally near freezing at night. Snow can also fall on occasion; however, heavy snow is uncommon. Summers are mild and comfortable, with sunlight, temperatures typically reach low to mid-19 to 20s Celsius. Rain can fall in any month, so people can expect a few wet days. Wind may be strong, especially close to the River Tees and coastal regions. Fog and mist might also appear, especially in autumn and winter. Overall, the weather is temperate maritime. Therefore, students should wear layers and a waterproof jacket. Further, it’s recommended to have an umbrella and sturdy footwear for moist days. For those who like clear skies, late spring and summer bring pleasant, sunnier weeks.

4.1.6 Transportation & Airports Near Middlesbrough Campus

The nearest airport to the campus is Teesside International Airport (airport code MME). It is about thirteen miles from the university. To this terminal, you can avail of a taxi or the special shuttle that will drop you off at the campus.

Another easily accessible international airport is Newcastle International Airport (IATA code NCL), which is located less than 50 miles from the university. Students arriving from either of the airports, particularly through Teesside International, will enjoy the university’s free “meet and greet” shuttle service on select occasions.

If you wish to travel by train, you can go to Middlesbrough railway station. It is an easy 10-15-minute walk from this station to the campus. For example, there are bus stops at “Swatters Carr” and at a “Teesside University” stop; many buses pass through these stops, connecting to neighbourhoods and nearby towns.

Vehicular access to the university is quite limited, as it doesn’t offer much space for parking. Most students and staff members use public transportation, cycle, or walk to school because the space is so scarce and has a long waiting list. On-campus facilities for cyclists include cycle racks, lockers, repair stations, and showers.

4.1.7 Student Life at Middlesbrough Campus

Campus life and sports activities in Middlesbrough blend academics, social activities, and culture. Students have access to a modern gym to improve their fitness. The “heart” of the campus, which is a pedestrianised area, is the place where events, social meet-ups, and informal gatherings take place. So, it forms an ensemble with the Teesside International Study Centre. Also, students can easily access libraries, teaching buildings for students, and support services of the campus.

The city, with all options for leisure, culture, and shopping, is located off campus, but very close by. This city is worth exploring. Here, students can inadvertently shop, eat at restaurants, sip coffee, and browse galleries, museums, and shops with local flavour. All this offers a pleasant patch for those occasional free days and leisure outings.

Sports and recreation are also embedded in student life. There are facilities for students, such as the gym and sports activity centres. They also have many sports-related clubs run through the student union.

For most students, the living costs of the city are much less than those of most major cities in the UK. This is really wonderful if you want to strike a balance between your academic life and your social life without leaving a hole in your pocket.

4.1.8 Night Life Around Campus and Middlesbrough

As dusk starts falling, Middlesbrough still retains its look of wakefulness. For students in all colleges and universities, this nightlife offers opportunities to go out, socialise, and have fun after lectures or examinations.

The Empire is one of the prime nightclub joints for students, a multi-level, massive club right in the town, which is always alive with DJ-ing, club nights, and student-only events, making it a true hotspot.

If you’d prefer something more comfy and cosy or intimate, then the small pubs and microbars which run partway down Southfield Road are most popular. According to reports, those places usually attract students, especially when sports or student nights are happening.

For example, Baker and Bedford Street have lots of indie bars and pubs coming in with live music or nights meant for the indie crowd. There are those bars over here that do a little karaoke, a few live music nights, or even just casual drinking, which is an excellent alternative to those big clubs.

Cafes and Restaurants

Some of the great places are a fusion of great fun with some food and a laid-back atmosphere – small cafes, casual eateries, and fun pubs for a chilled-out night as opposed to a loud clubbing night. Most of the time, this is what students choose while searching for a relaxing evening apart from a really heavy party night out.

That said, the nightlife in the city centre is viewed differently by different students of the university. Some like it, while others find some areas in that city to be quite dodgy at night, and thus they advise proceeding cautiously.

All that said, wherever you turn in Middlesbrough at night, something is going on-whether it’s big clubs or little pubs, combined with live music venues, all of which usually contain cool cafés. When it comes to students, they usually look according to their mood, price point, or company.

4.1.9 Accommodation (On-campus & Off-campus)

On campus, students’ accommodation can house approximately 900-912 students. There are resident halls, houses, or flats within a distance of about 5 minutes walking from campus.

Facilities are available, such as shared and en-suite rooms, depending on the subject hall. All bills, including heating and electricity, laundry facilities, and access to social kitchens for students, are provided, making settling in easy. So, students don’t need to spend time worrying about multiple bills.

The university gives students options for either a 40-week, 51-week, or 50-week stay. This gives flexibility depending on whether one wants to stay only during term times or a bit longer.

If you prefer an independent or free lifestyle, off-campus accommodation is highly recommended. For instance, Linthorpe Hall is a privately owned hall located around 200 meters from campus (a 2-minute walk). It offers en-suite rooms, furnished accommodation, high-speed internet, and shared kitchens.

Streets like Southfield Avenue, Linthorpe Road, Borough Road, and other nearby areas are very popular among university students for accommodation. This is an arrangement that allows much freedom, yet offers better space and often comes with managing bills and travelling.

Middlesbrough is less expensive than other bigger cities in the UK. This made accommodation on campus as well as off-campus comfortable for many students to afford.

It houses many specialities from emergency and surgical services to cancer care and cardiothoracic services, and neurological care, among many others. When working with serious emergencies or complicated procedures, the hospital can also step in for students from the university.

Besides James Cook, South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust also provides community health services through a network of community hospitals and urgent care centres.

The university here also offers health and wellness support services on campus. Students can generally access counselling, mental health support, and wellness resources through the Student Wellbeing Service.

Because the main hospital and community health services are within walking distance, students at the campus in Middlesbrough can access hospital treatment, from routine check-ups to emergencies.
