Plot Summary
The first episode starts by showing a set of passengers in a plane. It is later revealed that it was Flight 81 from Oceanic Airlines. A few moments later, the plane crashes on an unknown island that seems to be an inhabitant. So, the survivors try to gather resources from the crashed aircraft as much as they can. As time goes on, they look to be unorganized and have no idea how to move forward. That’s when Jack Shephard comes into play. He is a spinal surgeon. When the rest of the survivors’ minds are blank, he acts as a leader and leads them forward.
People believe him as he helped many of them when the plane crashed. As they move forward and discover the Island, they stumble upon many obstacles such as the ‘Smoke Monster’, polar bears, and many more. Eventually, they meet a French woman who was stranded here for 16 years before due to a shipwreck. From time to time, the viewers are shown the flashbacks of the primary survivors of the plane crash. When the story moves forward, the survivors split into two due to a difference of opinions, and conflicts start arising. Two survivors named Locke and Boon discover a mysterious hatch. But they find it difficult to open it.
Meanwhile, four other survivors, Sawyer, Michael, Walt, and jin, attempt to make a raft to escape the Island. But they fail nonetheless. The survivors contrive to open the hatch and find out that it was built 30 years before. A man named Desmond has been living there for three years. His job was to activate a computer program every 108 minutes. By doing so, it prevents catastrophic events from taking place on the Island. It is later disclosed that the hatch was built by the Dharma Initiative. John destroys the computer in the hatch and causes the Island to shake due to a change in electromagnetic pulse.
As the story progresses, we witness certain supernatural and time travel concepts involved in the show. Along the way, many of the characters die, and we are frequently taken back in time to show the history of the characters as well. The Dharma initiative’s involvement increases, and we are enlightened as the characters explore and discover new things both of the Island and its entities. The survivors keep on solving mysteries with the desperation of leaving the Island and returning to their homes. But the Island consumes some survivors, and it drives them mad. The smoke monster prevents them from leaving the Island. From then on, the story Is about how they escape the Island amidst the interference.
The Supernatural Elements
When the show begins, we are convinced that it’s a regular show, and makes us wonder how they could expand this as a story for six seasons. But as we watch through the episodes, we discover supernatural things involved. Some things are confusing, to be honest, but they give us chills. Each ending of an episode makes us so excited about the next one. The creators were very successful in gripping their viewers’ attention through thrill-seeking elements. This spurred a lot of discussion among the fans of Lost during the time it was aired. The creators let the viewers perceive what they saw through their eyes. I must say that the creators were successful in making the viewers talk about the show all the time. Because certain scenes were confusing, and the fans started to discuss what could be true. That’s definitely a victory for the creators.
The Cast Performance
The cast selection and their performances were phenomenal. Each and every character made a tremendous impact. Their background story gave us a good depth, and it mended how the audiences viewed it. The cast consists of people of different types of races and various religions. The diversity of survivors made the show beautiful. It must be strongly emphasized that each and every actor did justice to their role.
The Production
The series was shot on an Island in Hawaii named Oahu. The budget that went into this was worth it as we are able to feel the authentic feel of being trapped on an unknown island. The Production design must be appreciated as they’ve certainly worked hard to give us the original sense of a catastrophe.
Other Pros and Cons
Pros: The music is memorable as they significantly contribute to making the show better. Most importantly, the screenplay writing is impressive. While it is hard to manage and write such a complex story, the writers of this show have put tireless effort into this to make this a masterpiece, and I must say that they have succeeded in it, as this is considered as one of the best TV shows to be ever made. The visuals in the show are terrific. They bring out the emotions, and the Island feels perfectly and flawlessly.
Cons: The only issue that you might find in this one is the confusion that floats around when you watch. Some things will not be clearly conveyed. That’s when we feel like rewinding and watching it again. It sort of becomes annoying after a points.
The Overall Verdict (4.5/5 Stars)
This is considered one of the best shows ever made in television history, and there is no doubt about it. The complex story, the flawless writing, and the immense performance of the characters make this a memorable one.
