Plot Summary
Sarpatta Parambarai action movie, starring actors Arya, Pasupathy, Dhusara Vijayan, Jhon Vijay, and John Kokken is about a man named Kabilan who is enthusiastic about Boxing and finds it hard to participate in it due to the tragic past of his father. Set up in the 80s, Kabilan, who lives in Vada Chennai, is a worker who works for daily wages and is a massive fan of Boxing and is dying to participate in it, but he is deprived of joining the boxers due to his mother’s objection.
She is right to do so as it is revealed later in the movie that her husband, who is Kabilan’s father, has lost his life due to Boxing. The film opens up with Kabilan looking at the time and is anticipating watching the Boxing tournament that’s going to take place. He runs off as soon as the bell goes off, indicating that his working shift has just ended. But the tournament doesn’t go well as Kabilan wished as the clan he supports, Sarpatta Parambarai, loses the main matchh against the Current Champions Idiyappa Parambarai. He is who has been winning consequently without losing against anyone.
After the game ends, Rangan, who is the Coach of Sarpatta gets trash-talked by the opposition in a humiliating way and is tempted to put the clan’s pride and name on the line. So he challenges them for one last fight where if Sarpatta Loses, they will be gone from Boxing for good. The main obstacle for Rangan comes here, as he is confused about who is competent enough to fight Vembuli, who is the current champion. He only has two choices, one is his son Vetri, and the other one is Raman. Rangan goes against his companions‘ advice and chooses Raman, who he thinks possesses the capability to fight Vembuli. Then as the training begins, Rangan is not satisfied with Raman as he was not making up to the coach’s expectations.
One day he is sent back home humiliated by Rangan as Raman did not perform well. The next day, Rangan waits for his Student, but he does not show up. So Rangan goes to Raman’s house with Kabilan to see what is up. He is baffled by the visuals he gets to see when he gets there. Raman’s Uncle Thaniga has set up a Boxing Ring in his own house to train his nephew and has hired a Military Boxing trainer. Rangan feels humiliated and leaves and cuts his ties with him.
A few days later, Raman shows up at Rangans place because Vetri has challenged him for a duel without Rangan’s knowledge. Rangan gets mad at this and leaves the place. Kabilan seizes this opportunity and challenges Raman for a duel. At first, he refuses as Kabilan has never participated in a Boxing match, which would be a humiliation for Raman. But he is tempted by Kabilan’s word and accepts it. But Rangan gets to know about this and quickly arrives at the scene to witness Kabilan winning. He is shocked as the others and sees a lot of potential in Kabilan and decides to put him up against Vembuli. The rest of the movie revolves around the challenges and obstacles Kabilan faces in this process and how he tackles them.
The Political Aspects
Pa.Ranjith is an epitome of a political director, as he has done so in his previous movies. He imposes and conveys his ideology in a subtle manner where we won’t notice it, but it’s still there, filling our eyes. That’s his specialty. He has perfectly portrayed the political situation back then in the 80s without shoving it in the audience’s face.
The Perfect Characterization
Most characters in the movie only have minutes of screen presence, but they still create a significant impact due to Pa. Ranjith’s excellent writing skills.
Other Pros and Cons
Pros:
Music composed by Santhosh Narayanan makes a huge impact in this movie as it elevates many scenes, and we end up having goosebumps. Not to mention the editing, which goes smooth and seamless throughout the film and the cuts and transitions are incredible. Editing fighting scenes are complex as it is required to change the camera angles very frequently, thus good editing skills are needed as this is a movie that contains a lot of fighting and quarrelingS. So I will be not wrong to say that the editor has delivered his best.
The screenplay writing skills of Pa.Ranjith and Thamizh Praba must be applauded here as a three–hour movie didn’t feel boring for even a second. We all know that the Hero would win the end but carrying the whole film through screenplay is not an easy task, making the audience anticipate each scene presented. Furthermore, the performances of the cast are mind–blowing, even though we see a lot of new faces in the movie but they don’t disappoint us.
Cons:
This movie was so perfect in many ways except one, which is that an alternate version of ‘Neeye Oli‘ was played in the motivational montage. ‘Neeye Oli‘ was a huge hit as soon as the trailer for Sarpatta Dropped. But we were disappointed at the version that was placed in the movie as everyone was anticipating that moment, and it was immediately ruined.
Overall Verdict (4.5/5 Stars)
Sarpatta Parambarai is a hard–hitting and fast–paced movie that everyone must watch. It should not be missed for the Actions and the effort put by the whole crew of Sarpatta.
