Plot Summary
‘Free Guy’ starring Actors Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, and Joe Keery, is a movie revolving around a character in a game called ‘Guy,’ an NPC (Non-Playable Character), in which he is given Artificial Intelligence. When Guy realizes it, he questions the iteration of the activities that are done on a daily basis and decides to change it. That’s where all the trouble begins. Firstly, he decides to question his job. His life always goes in the same loop without breaking or even a trivial change. In the morning, he goes to his job at the bank, and some nut crack comes to rob the bank, and the employees kneel down and let them rob without any interference as the countless number of times they have done before. But ‘guy’ is done with it.
This time he picks up a Gun from an online player and ends up shooting him. And takes his equipment, including his Sun Glasses which gives him the ability to do and see things only an online player has access to. From then on, a series of events take place where he learns the amazing things which only an Online player has the capability to do. But that’s not where it gets interesting; the two developers who sold the game find out that they have been cheated and robbed of their special AI feature in the game, and the thief is none other than the boss under whom one of the two developers is working for.
Upon this discovery, the Female and Male Developer Duo decide to crack their way through the game and try to find evidence so that they can put the thief behind bars. In this Process, Actor Jodie Comer who plays one of the developers falls in love with ‘Guy,’ reckoning he is an online player and unenlightened of the fact he is indeed a Product of Artificial Intelligence Feature that she herself developed and coded. Succeeding this, the rest of the story is about how they find the evidence beyond all the obstacles and save their game successfully.
The Unique Concept
The concept that Director Shawn Levy has come up with should be appreciated leaving all the other factors that contribute to making a movie special. Of course, there are similar Movies out there that delineate the life of gamers or virtual worlds. But the ‘Free Guy’ Movie is different and unique from the others out there. What makes it special is the concept of Artificial Intelligence fused to a Non playable Character in a game. This Movie definitely has flavors from the Director’s previous Movies, which did well at the Box Office, Such as the Night at the museum Movies, Real Steel and Pink Panther. This Movie definitely earned the privilege to be called one of the best Movies by the Director.
Where it went bad
Like all the other Movies, this too has its flaws. To begin with, the Major weakness is Bad Characterization. Actors Ryan Reynold, Taika Waititi, and Lil Rel Howery have done an exceptional job and played their character seamlessly, and their characters were on par with the story and seemed relatable. We found ourselves giggling and laughing in most moments. But the main two characters, Played by Actors Jodie Comer and Joe Keery, were not convincing at all. They were supposed to steal the show. But we can’t take our eye off Ryan Reynolds as he performs tirelessly, making the other two look bland. The Real-Life Developer’s Characters were supposed to make us feel relatable. But it’s vice versa.
Other Pros and Cons
Pros: Screenplay plays a Humongous part in making a Movie Successful and Box Office Vise. The Director, who, of course, gave us Box Office hits before, has clearly embedded this in his mind. And gave this job to two of the best in the business. Yes! The screenplay was written by Matt Lieberman, whose most notable work is from one of the Movies of Dr.DoLittle and Zak Penn, who is known for the Movies and ‘Ready Player One’ and ‘The Avengers.’ It must be said that they have done a wonderful job with the story given where the movie didn’t feel boring, not even once.
Furthermore, it must be noted that the Movie Editor and VFX Artists play a huge part in making this a success both critically and Box Office vise. Because it is not a child’s play to create a virtual world that looks realistic. The Visuals engage the audiences very much, and the editing was as smooth as it can be. Speaking of Engaging factors! I must not forget the surprising elements in the movies that make the audience happy and wholesome. I’m literally trying my best to make this as spoiler-free as possible, so it’s definitely for you to find out! It’s not available on Netflix, but it’s in Disney Movies. Watch it in the comfort of your home!
Cons:
The accuracy in portraying online gaming must be questioned here. Of course, an average member of the audience might not have faults. But a person who has played or who is playing games will be quick to find them out. The camera angles and the way it’s portrayed on the monitor are definitely not convincing. They could have easily researched about it to make it perfect. I could not resist but find it as a fault. Plus, the Background score sounded Mediocre, where a lot of scenes required to be elevated through Music but failed.
Overall Verdict (3/5 stars)
The Latest Movie ‘Free Guy’ from actor Ryan Reynolds is definitely worth a try for its comedy, fun, and action.
It’s a pity and loss for Netflix as they fail to acquire the digital premiere rights for the Movie. And it comes as an advantage for Disney Movies. Do watch it in Disney Movies!
